Food – The Great Connection

Specific dishes, ingredients, and preparation styles have significant cultural impacts. With smell and taste being senses closely tied to memory, it’s no wonder why food plays an important role in traveling/tourism.

Our favorite recipes and foods tell a story. We’d like to get to know you and the recipes that are important to you and your culture.

Deliciously Diverse will be a monthly recipe-sharing post by the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. We are asking for your participation by providing recipes for dishes that are significant to your culture, or recipes that you’ve tried/would like to try from differing cultures.

Ultimately we’d like to collect as many recipes as possible and host a cross-location potluck to celebrate all the cultures that make us who we are.

This Month’s Recipe:

Grits are a simple, and yet, controversial breakfast food. Though grits aren’t a widely popular food, those who do enjoy them seem to have many strong beliefs about how they’re prepared and flavored.

According to My Cousin Vinny (the movie, that is) “No self-respecting southerner uses instant grits.” This is a sentiment shared by many, excluding me. Y’all I only use instant grits. In fact, I looked up the included recipe on thekitchn.com because I couldn’t possibly begin to tell you how to make traditional grits. I’m definitely pro -having my meal done in 5 minutes.

Outside of the arguments on whether or not grits should be eaten at all, or if instant grits should be a source of shame, there is another major grits argument always floating around.

SWEET OR SAVORY! The internet is full of threads arguing over whether or not you are to put sugar or salt in your grits. I am on team salt. I prefer savory grits with cheese and butter. If you haven’t picked a side yet, feel free to give different varieties a try, and choose wisely.
